Discovery Program

(18-36 MONTHS)

Monday & Wednesday AND/OR Tuesday & Thursday - 3-5pm - $500 every two months (8 week session)

Camelot Kids Child Development Center utilizes the most effective introductory education components in early childhood education. The Discovery Program is specifically designed to introduce your child to the concept of school and positively reinforce potty learning, environmental awareness, relationship building and sensory development. At Camelot our goal to provide a positive and successful educational experience for every student, as well as offer a beneficial resource center for every parent.

The Discovery Program is a wonderful way to integrate a school routine into your child’s life in a gradual, yet structured manner. The program operates on two month basis and space is limited. To sign up please fill out our online interest form and let us know which month you would like to start, then email your request to info@camelotkids.org. Your name will be put on a wait list and you will be notified when space becomes available.

Please read our Discovery Welcome Letter for more information.

The daily schedule of activities for the Discovery Program is as follows:

3:00-3:15 – Greetings/Small Group Free Play

For the sake of continuity we ask that each family be prompt, as to not distract the class in progress. During this time children can play in our wonderful studio environment perfect for the active energy level of a pre-preschooler. The classroom setting offers exploration of a dramatic play center, sensory development stations, as well as a variety of toys.

3:15-3:30 - Discovery Greeting Time/Circle Time

Each week, class will begin with “Circle Time” where the children will learn fun new songs and games that are currently a part of the Camelot curriculum. This particular time block is vital for students to properly adapt to their new environment and friends. The concept of routine is instituted via social activities and educational play.

3:30-4:00 – Discovery Enrichment (this component changes every 2 months and has two different classes each week) – check schedule for Enrichment offered.

This component of the program consists of specialized learning time where we bring in an Enrichment Teacher to teach a variety of specialized classes. It’s a time of high energy, movement, dance, singing, music, yoga, cooking, language or art. It is time to celebrate while your children practice following directions, strengthen listening abilities, expand their vocabulary while learning a world of new and exciting experiences.

4:00-4:15 Discovery Potty Breaks

We will also be focusing on the “I can do it” segment of the program which encourages responsibility and self esteem through age appropriate tasks such as cleaning up after themselves, helping to put toys away, and potty breaks in which children are encouraged to use our child size restrooms.

4:15-4:50 Discovery Snacks/Nutrition/Outdoor Play

The last segment of the program focuses on healthy eating habits through snacks and discovering new and interesting foods. Healthy snacks are provided and parents may sign up to bring ethnic or favorite foods for sharing time. When the children are finished eating they will have another opportunity for outside learning activities where students can create projects and explore activities in our wonderful play yard. This is a great time to play outside and socialize with their new friends.

4:50-5:00 – “Who Came to School Today” goodbye song

The last ten minutes of the day will be closing time that recaps the day’s activities and lessons. We always take a moment to thank each child for coming to school and provide praise for the activities that they have participated in.

ENRICHMENT CLASS OUTLINE

Yogi Dragons – Taught by Ms. Heather Funston

Camelot Kids believes in instilling balance and sense of self at an early age. Movement, breath, dance, and song are wrapped up into fun interactive games and self-esteem building activities. Kids will express themselves creatively in an environment of non-judgment, respect and love where they can fully celebrate who they are. Themes of sharing, team-work, self-love, and respect for one’s self and others are artfully woven into the class in a kid friendly way. Kids’ Yoga builds physical strength, stamina, balance, and coordination. Yoga also stimulates frontal lobe development, encouraging sensory integration, increasing a child’s capacity to learn and self-soothe. The major requirement of the class is to “have fun” and kids and caregivers soon find it is unavoidable to follow and will tap into their own child like creativity, intuition, and over all silliness to create a fun interactive bonding experience for them and their little yogi!

Habla Blah Blah – Taught by Ms. Valeria Mason

The focus on this class is to introduce new languages in a playful and safe environment that is specifically designed to target new little ears, mouths, and brains at this critical period of learning and language acquisition. Addressing multiple intelligences and learning styles, our classes follow an organic approach to learning that is child-centered, creating an environment that is not only conducive, but natural, to children and their caregivers… encouraging active participation in song, play, and ritualized communication that can be easily repeated and reinforced at home.

“Jam-a-lot Kids” – Taught by Ms Peggy Pierce

“If you can walk, you can dance; if you can talk, you can sing!” In Jam-a-lot Kids we will learn new songs, and improvise on old favorites. The songs are presented through a variety of interactive musical activities including finger play, dance and movement, prop work with scarves, parachute and balls, and instrument play. The atmosphere encourages participation and improvisation by both children and adults, regardless of musical skill, talent or training. And it’s fun-tastic!

“Art-astic” – Taught by Ms. Caitlin Lainoff

Toddlers and their caregivers will create awesome projects inspired by beautiful children’s literature through multicultural experiences where both children and parents can INTERACT with materials such as sand, clay, paper, and glue sticks.  This is not just children watching parents make a craft–you will actually get to do hands-on projects with your child that you will treasure forever such as a “Touch and Feel” type book with cotton, tin foil, etc. inspired by Pat the Bunny, creating a time capsule based on the pop-up book, Time, in which children place their first words and pictures and decorate the container, a sand shaker based on the Starfish book, a scaly fish based on Rainbow Fish, a decorated T-shirt based on That’s Not My Dolly, a castle from different eras based on the Fairy book, placemats based on Brown Bear, Brown Bear and more!  Local teaching artist and visual artist Caitlin Lainoff (MFA from CalArts, Larchmont Charter teacher, puppetry teacher from Plaza de la Raza, scene and set designer, among others!) guides children and parents through this series of projects and exploration, even introducing some basic elements of visual art such as line, color, contrast, and texture.  Come enjoy the fun of art, literature, and even some wiggling to music in between!

“Around The World With Fairy & Folk Tales Through Music & Movement” – Taught by Ms. Alina Hevia

Folk tales, fairy tales and nursery rhymes read aloud, then the fun begins as the kids sing, chant, dance and pantomime the songs that accompany them. (”Jack Be Nimble”, “Ms. Mary Mack,” “Cinco Patitos/5 Little Ducklings”). Finger plays and puppets also include (”Old Macdonald,” “5 Little Monkeys,” “Where Is Thumbkin,” “5 Little Pumpkins/Ducks/etc.”)

“Instrument Making & Percussion” – Taught by Ms. Sarah Peters

Families make their own egg shakers, drums, rain sticks and guitars and play them in rhythms to macro beats and micro beats as well as play-a-longs to music from all cultures including our own.

“Down on the Farm” Taught by Ms Sarah Peters

This is an assemblage class that involves creating a farm scene from craft supplies, and found and recycled objects. Children and parents design and build a 3-dimensional project representing animals, barns, fences and anything else they want on their very own farm.  A great class for team-building as well as layout and design.  Teaching artist also incorporates songs, stories, books and manipulatives related to farm life, including stuffed animals, puppets, dolls and toys.  And of course, we will sing “Old MacDonald,” “Vengan a Ver,” and so much more!  Come on down to the farm!

“Little Composers” Taught by Ms Sarah

This class focuses on a different composer each week from Vivaldi to Mozart to the Beatles, with scarves, shakers, coloring pages, sing-alongs and read-alouds. An early childhood music class that parents will love and learn from too!

“Furry Fuzzy Animals” taught by Miss Tricia Lyn Scott

Some of children’s first sounds, signs, & movement are of animals!! In this class, we will introduce & develop our child’s ‘inner animal’ through sign, body movement (yoga/exercise/dance), along with visual arts & crafts. We will be listening & working to songs like ‘Hakuna Matata’, the ‘Jungle Book’ theme, ‘Old MacDonald’, etc. After discovering the little ‘animal’ within them, your child will demonstrate through costume/wardrobe, sound & movement just how they’d behave in our ‘Jungle Parade’. In the end, you’ll be pleased to embrace the furry, fuzzy creature inside of them & might be shocked to discover the one inside of you!!

“Mysteries of Marbling” taught by Miss Caitlan Lainoff

Tots ages 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers get a chance to make art together with marbling.  Get a little messy together as you make stationery, paper goods, books, and more.  Your child’s kinesthetic, visual, and tactile modalities will be stimulated as he or she gets “into” art with you.  This class will teach the easy and beautiful art of marbling. It’s fun and fast and full of surprises. Paint is dripped onto a tray of liquid, swirled around and then transferred to paper. We’ll make all sorts of things including painted lunch bags, holiday ornaments and picture frames.

“Indie Kids” taught by Miss Alina Hevia

Come learn, play, sing and move with your child to contemporary music (”Indie” artists).  Imagine beloved childhood favorites such as “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Little Red Caboose” sung by your favorites like Lisa Loeb, and Elizabeth Mitchell, interspersed with kid-friendly music from Beirut, Ratatat, and Fitz and the Tantrums. In addition, learn some new kid-songs sung by the pop and rock bands of today like The Bare Naked Ladies, and We Might Be Giants, which may speak to your heart about the daily joys and tasks of parenthood.  Your child will develop musical skills such as pitch awareness (high/low), rhythm sense (steady beat), tempo (fast/slow), and dynamics (loud/soft).  Applying these skills in fun, interactive, and age-appropriate ways with you as his/her model, little ones will obtain a strong musical foundation, nurturing motor skills and brain development for later study in music, math and reading.  Use scarves, percussion instruments, bells, rhythm sticks, and creative movement to experience this multi-faceted early childhood music class with a fun, upbeat musical feel.

Art Moves Me – taught by Miss Angela Perino

This class is designed to combine movement and physical activity with art making. Our inspiration will be action painting and we will look at the work of Jackson Pollock. Classes will explore a variety of ways that we can create art through movement and physical activity. Lessons will include painting with hands and feet, drawing the world’s longest line (an activity in which the children will use markers to draw continuous lines along a winding “maze” of paper), musical chairs painting, drawing “dancing silhouettes”, painting with bubbles, and we will collaboratively recreate a Jackson Pollock painting as well. Circle time will include songs with movement and dance, stories that are art oriented and/or are known books distinctively for outstanding illustrations.
